GA Medigap Quotes

Medicare Supplement or Advantage. Which plan costs less?

As long as you are healthy, the $0 premium Medicare Advantage plan is great. But you might want to set aside an extra $300 per month or more in a “rainy day” fund. When your health changes the Medicare Advantage plans are like a leaky bathtub that loses water faster than it comes in.

Medicare supplement or Advantage - Which is better?

What if you are not be able to come up with enough money to pay all your bills because you were sold an Advantage plan? Is this really what you want in your golden years?

Advantage plans are great for healthy people who never go to the doctor or hospital.

If you are living on a fixed income and need to budget your monthly expenses, a Medigap plan is usually the better choice. Your Medicare supplement plan F means you will never have to worry about paying for hospital or doctor bills.

$0 Premium Advantage Plan Seems Like a Good Deal

Yes it does seem like a good deal, and that is often the way it is sold by agents looking for an “easy” sale. When choosing Medicare supplement or Advantage, most agents will push the Advantage plans, especially the ones with $0 premium.

Do you know why?

An agent will earn 2x as much when you buy an Advantage plan vs. what they are paid to offer a Medigap plan.

And that $0 premium is so easy to pitch to someone on a fixed income . . .

What is better than free?

Medicare supplement or Advantage? Which is better for you and which is better for the agents bank account?

If you are struggling to pay your bills now what will happen when you need to see a doctor or have some tests and the Advantage plan requires you to come up with $500 or more to get the care  you need?

A Medicare supplement plan makes it easy to stick to your budget without worrying about surprises.

Do You Like Your Doctors? Who Doesn’t?

If so, you probably want a Medicare supplement plan F or even G.

Almost every doctor, hospital, lab and clinic in the U.S. accepts Medicare patients. When you have a Medicare Advantage plan the insurance carrier tells you which doctors you can see.

Less than half the doctors in Georgia participate in ANY Medicare Advantage plan and the ones that do won’t participate in all plans. Your chances of finding a doctor that participates in your Advantage plan could be very slim.

Even if your doctors currently are “in network” for your Advantage plan they may drop out at any time. When that happens you find a new doctor.

If you don’t want to continually hunt for new doctors, then the answer to Medicare supplement or Advantage becomes an easy one.

Advantage Plans are Great if You Never Get Sick

But when your health changes, you will wish you had a Medicare supplement plan and by then it is probably too late to switch.

Advantage plans are “pay me later” plans. You pay little or nothing on a monthly basis but when you need to use your plan you pay and pay and pay. Oh sure, they have an out of pocket limit that in some cases is capped at $6700 (in 2018), but that is only for IN NETWORK expenses.

When you go out of network, and that is very easy to do, the out of pocket limit becomes meaningless.

Medicare supplement plans don’t have any networks so you pay the same regardless of the doctor, clinic or hospital you use. No penalties for seeing the wrong doctor or being admitted to the wrong hospital.

Medigap plans are great when you are on a shoestring budget.

So which is best for you? Medicare supplement or Advantage?

At Georgia Medicare Plans we explain all your options, including Medicare supplement or Advantage plans, and let you decide which one is best for your needs and your budget. How Much Does a Medicare Supplement Plan Cost in Georgia?

Bob Vineyard · May 27, 2014 ·

Georgia Medicare supplement plan cost ranges from low to high. How do you find the best Medigap plan? Are AARP Medicare supplement plan costMedicare plans better? Is Medicare supplement plan F the best?

Do you need a Medicare agent to help or can you find the BEST Medigap rates on your own?

Medigap Plans and Rates in Georgia

How Much Does a Medicare Supplement Plan Cost in Georgia?

It depends.

Medigap rates are based on your age and home zip code. Most carriers also adjust rates for gender . . . men usually pay higher rates than women. Medicare supplement plan cost is generally higher for tobacco users vs. non-tobacco.

Some Medigap applications ask your height and weight. If your BMI falls outside their guidelines they will deny coverage.

Most, but not all Medigap plans charge extra for tobacco if you apply during your initial enrollment period. Some will penalize you if you have used tobacco in the last 5 years, others only ask about the last 12 months.

Many carriers will not apply the higher tobacco rate when you apply for a Medigap plan during your initial enrollment period.

In general, you should expect to pay more for a Medigap plan from major carriers like Blue Cross, the Mutual company, AARP (United Healthcare) and Humana.

When you pay more you don’t get more, you simply paid too much.

How do you find the best Georgia Medigap plan?

The best plan is the one that fits your needs and budget.

With over 170 Medigap plans in Georgia, finding the best one for you is easy when you have access to the right tools. The challenge is, most consumer information is either unavailable to the public or is so technical you find it almost impossible to decipher.

If you have ever looked for Part D plans on Medicare.gov you know what I mean.

Searching Medicare supplement plan cost in Georgia is much easier, if all you want is a rate.

Are Medigap plans from AARP better?

AARP is a political lobbying organization, not an insurance carrier. Currently they endorse plans from United Healthcare in exchange for getting a cut off every premium dollar.

If you speak with an agent that represents the AARP plans you will probably only be shown rates for Medicare supplement plan F. The same will be true if you talk to agents from Blue Cross, Humana, or the Mutual company.

Plan F is their “go to” plan in most situations for a reason.

Plan F is the easiest to explain. It has the highest premium. It pays the most commission.

If you are like most consumers, you are more interested in finding the best overall value for your dollar.

At Georgia Medicare Plans, we never recommend plans from well known carriers and we never suggest plan F.

All Medicare supplement plans with the same letter are identical in every way. The 2017 Choosing a Medigap Policy booklet from Medicare even states that on page 9. They further state in bold print, “Cost is usually the only difference between Medigap policies with the same letter sold by different insurance companies”.

Why pay more if the plans are the same?

Why would a 65 year old female in Macon, Georgia pay $192 for plan F (2018 rate) endorsed by AARP, or $192 for the same plan from Blue Cross when they could have the exact same coverage for $132 per month?

Is Medicare supplement plan F the best?

We never recommend Medigap plan F. In almost every situation we find our clients would be better off financially by choosing something other than plan F.

At the same time we recognize this is your plan and your money. We can show you rates and help you compare Medicare supplement plan cost from more than 170 different carriers.

And we can do this in less than 3 minutes over the phone. Give us a call. We promise not to bite.

How Much Does a Good Medigap Plan Cost in Georgia?

Bob Vineyard · September 10, 2013 ·

medigap plan costHave ever wondered “How much does a good Medigap plan cost in Georgia”?  The short answer is, a lot less than a bad plan. Where can I find an affordable Medicare supplement plan? How can I tell a good Medigap plan from a bad one? Is it OK for me to shop online to find the best rates?  How much should I expect to pay for a good Medigap plan? Is a Blue Cross Medicare supplement plan better than one from someone I have never heard of? What’s up with the dog?

Is a Blue Cross Medicare supplement plan better than one from someone I have never heard of?

Your father or mother probably told you that you can never go wrong with a brand you know.

Just because Ford made the Edsel, and GM built the Corvair is no reason to believe either of those companies would make a bad product, right? When it comes to Medicare supplement insurance coverage, many people automatically pick a plan from Blue Cross, United (AARP) or Mutual of Omaha because of brand recognition.

Everyone, including doctors and hospitals,  know these companies and you expect everyone to “accept” your plan because of the brand recognition.

True, but when it comes to Medigap coverage, doctors and hospitals are just as willing to accept a plan from Humana or Equitable or New Era as they are any of those big name carriers.

Here is a truth you need to understand. Any doctor, lab or hospital that accepts Medicare assignment will ALSO take your Medicare supplement plan regardless of the company that issued your policy.

Your Medigap plan cost can still be affordable and you don’t have to rob a bank to pay for your coverage.

When you pay more you don’t get more, you simply paid too much.

How can I tell a good Medigap plan from a bad one?

On the surface, you can’t.

As a friend used to say, this information is on a need to know basis and you don’t need to know. What you DO need to know is this.

Any doctor, lab or hospital that participates in Medicare assignment will not refuse your Medigap plan. Most won’t even ask to see your ID card. They don’t need it.

When you are treated the provider bills Medicare, not your Medigap carrier. Medicare reviews and adjudicates the claim. When the claim is approved Medicare sends the claim to your Medicare supplement carrier for them to pay their portion.

Your supplement carrier will not pay any claim until it is first approved by Medicare. If Medicare approves your claim, your supplement carrier cannot deny it.

How much should I expect to pay for a good Medigap plan?

The rate you are billed is determined by a number of factors. Georgia Medicare supplement carriers will charge you a rate based on your age, zip code and the plan you select. Some carriers will also set rates based on your gender or tobacco usage.

Some carriers will raise your rates as you get older. Happy birthday. Here is your new rate.

Others consider you like Dorian Gray . . . you never age. If you buy at age 65 you are always billed as if you never got older.

The “birthday” carriers will often increase your rates twice in one year. Dorian Gray carriers only change rates as needed and you are never singled out for higher Medigap plan cost no matter how much you use your plan.

Did you know that Medicare supplement plans with the same letter (plan F for example) are identical in EVERY WAY except the premium? Just because you paid more for a Blue Cross, Mutual of Omaha or AARP plan does not mean you got a better plan. You simply paid more than you needed to.

Is it OK for me to shop online to find the best rates?

There is nothing wrong with shopping online to find Medigap plan cost. Nothing wrong as long as you don’t mind paying more for your coverage.

Most Medigap carriers do not allow their rates to be illustrated online and many who only provide offline rates have a lower cost than the big names. Here is an example.

If you are a female, age 65, living in Savannah, Georgia and don’t use tobacco you can find the following Medigap plan cost factors for the F policy.

Blue Cross – $170

Mutual of Omaha – $179

AARP – $159

Best Medigap plan cost for F is currently $126.

Why pay $30 – $50 more each month for the exact same plan when you could keep that $400 – $600 per year in your own bank rather than giving it to the insurance company?

Who needs the money more? You, or the insurance carrier?

How do you find low cost Medigap plans in Georgia?

Ask me.

I have Medigap rates you won’t see anywhere else.

How much does a good Medigap plan cost in Georgia?

Less than you think.

Bob Vineyard at Georgia Medicare Plans has affordable Medigap plans for people of all ages.  We can show you the best rates for Medicare supplement plan F, but we will also take the time to educate you on other options that can save you hundreds of dollars every year. We recently showed a couple in south Georgia a way to cut their Medigap premiums by over $1700 per year.

I can’t guarantee to save you that much but at least 99% of the time I can show you ways to get the best plan for your needs and make it affordable.

So what’s up with the dog?

If you made it this far you are probably wondering what’s up the the dog in the upper right corner?

If you know anything about dogs or watched Lassie or Old Yeller, you know that dogs have a way of communicating with humans. When they don’t understand something, they will cock their head to the side as if to say, “What’s that all about?”.

If you paid too much for your Medigap plan and didn’t buy from Georgia Medicare Plans, you may get a funny look from your dog.

What is the Best Medicare Supplemental Insurance Plan?

Bob Vineyard · April 19, 2013 · Leave a Comment

best Medicare supplemental insurance planYou probably have wondered this yourself. Just what is the best Medicare supplemental insurance plan in Georgia, or in Tennessee?

We know this is a popular question because it is asked a lot in one form or another. What is the best Medigap plan? How do I find the best Medicare supplement plan? Who has the best Medicare supplemental insurance plan rates?

As a participating guest agent at the Insurance Library, we recently answered the question “What is the Best Medicare Insurance Supplement?“.

Our response follows.

Only you can decide which Medicare supplement insurance plan is best after considering your needs and budget.

Medicare supplement insurance rates are based on your age, zip code, plan, tobacco use and (in some situations) your height and weight.

All Medicare plans with the same letter are identical in every way . . . except the price.

OK, that was a bit weak, but we only have so much time and space so answers need to be brief.

The best Medicare supplement plan is truly the one that fits your needs and budget, but it goes beyond that.

Will My Doctor Take a Medicare Supplement Plan from (Company XYZ)?

We get this quite often. Some folks believe they will have better coverage, or more doctors will accept their plan if they pay more to get a “name brand” carrier.

The truth is, if your doctor accepts Medicare assignment they don’t care which insurance company issued your Medicare supplement plan.

One plan is not better than another, there really is no such thing as the best Medicare supplemental insurance plan.

Will I get a Better Medigap Policy if I pay more?

No, you won’t.

All Medicare supplement plans with the same letter are identical in every way . . . except price.

Paying a higher premium does not get you a better policy. It simply means you paid too much.

We recently showed a couple from south Georgia how they could save over $1700 per year by swapping their high priced plan from (a name brand) carrier to another company.

Who has that kind of money to throw away?

Is Medicare Supplement Plan F the Best?

Medigap plan F is the “Cadillac” of Medicare supplement plans. Not everyone can afford, nor do they need a Cadillac.

Probably 90% of my Medicare clients find that a Buick or Chevy get’s them where they need to go and they enjoy pocketing the savings.

You really don’t need to spend a fortune to find the best Medicare supplemental insurance plan for your needs and budget.

Stop throwing money away! How much can you save? Many of our clients will save $30 – $60 per month by making a switch. We showed one couple how to save over $1700 per year.

  • Compare Blue Cross Medicare supplement rates using this link.
  • All plans with the same letter (F, G, N) are identical EXCEPT for price
  • Paying a higher premium does not get you a better policy
  • Any doctor that accepts Medicare will accept your Medicare supplement plan
  • Higher premiums charged by “big name Medigap companies” is throwing money away

Who Should Consider BCBSGA Medicare Plans?

BCBSGA Medicare supplement rates  are competitive for Hi F plans at most ages and zip codes, and Blue Cross writes more Medigap plans than any other carrier in the state.

Well known and widely accepted, with Blue Cross you will never have to file a claim form. Your doctor, hospital or clinic will file claims for you with Medicare.

Once Medicare adjudicates and approves your claim, they will send it on to Blue Cross for payment of their portion of the claim.

Blue Cross is the best known Medigap carrier in the state, but did you know this?

Why Overpay When You Don’t Have To?

ALL Medicare supplement carriers pay claims accurately and on a timely basis . . . usually within 10 days of receiving the claim from Medicare.

It doesn’t matter if you have Blue Cross, AARP (United Healthcare), USAA, Mutual of Omaha, Gerber, Humana or New Era. Everyone of them will pay your claims promptly and without question.

Something else you may not know.

All Medigap plans with the same letter are identical.

If you have Blue Cross Medicare supplement plan F  it is identical in every way to Medigap plan F from Mutual of Omaha. The only difference is the price you pay.

When you pay more you don’t get more, you simply paid too much!

Georgia Medicare Plans is proud to offer Blue Cross to our Medicare supplement clients, but we also have other fine Medigap carriers. If we can find a way to help you save money by switching from BCBSGA Medicare supplement rates to a lower premium plan we will make that suggestion. Sometimes you can benefit by switching plans and carriers.

Our responsibility is to you, our client, not to the carrier. Ask for a no obligation comparative Medigap analysis. Discover how much you can save.
